In the 1960s, a chemist named Raphael Mechoulam did something no one had done before: he isolated and identified the active compounds in cannabis. He wasn’t looking for anything in the human brain. He was doing plant chemistry — asking what, precisely, was in this plant that had been used by humans for thousands of years. The compounds he identified were named after the plant itself: cannabinoids, from cannabis. It seemed like straightforward botanical nomenclature.

It turned out to be one of the most consequential naming decisions in the history of medicine: when researchers discovered a receptor in the human brain in 1988 — a receptor shaped to receive these plant compounds with remarkable precision — the question became immediately unsettling: Why does the human brain have receptors for a plant compound? The receptor was named the cannabinoid receptor, after the compounds that fit it.

It seemed bizarre. It took another three decades to find the answer — and what they discovered changed everything. The human body wasn’t hijacked by cannabis. It had been running its own cannabinoid system all along, built from hundreds of millions of years of shared biochemical history between animals and plants — especially cannabis. Different kingdoms, different architecture — but the same fundamental molecular language.

That made no biological sense. And it turned out to be completely wrong — in the most interesting possible way.

In 1992, Mechoulam’s team found the answer. The brain wasn’t built around cannabis. It had been running its own cannabinoid system all along — producing its own compounds, activating its own receptors, doing its own regulatory work continuously and silently. The plant compounds fit the receptors not because the brain evolved around cannabis, but because both the plant and the animal had been speaking versions of the same molecular language for hundreds of millions of years.

We found the plant compounds first. Then we found the receptors. Then we found that the body had been making its own version all along. In other words, we discovered the key before we knew there was a lock — and found the lock before we knew the body already had its own key.

The word “cannabinoid” still carries cannabis in its name — a reminder of the order we found things in, not the order they actually exist. Your endocannabinoid system was never about cannabis. Cannabis just happened to speak a language your body already knew.
This isn’t a coincidence. It wasn’t bizarre at all. It was inevitable. We just found it in the wrong order.
